Who we are

Common Ground UK Ltd is a private limited company registered in England and Wales. We operate the civic accountability platform at commongrounduk.com. For data and privacy enquiries, contact privacy@commongrounduk.com.

What we collect

When you vote on a question, we store your response anonymously using a session identifier generated in your browser. We do not collect your name, email address, or any personally identifiable information unless you choose to create an account.

If you choose to create an account, we collect your email address for authentication purposes only. Your email is stored as a cryptographic hash — we cannot read it, only verify it. Supabase handles authentication on our behalf.

If you choose to complete the voluntary demographic profile, we collect your age band, sex, postcode prefix (first two to four characters only), and party preference at the last election. This data is stored anonymously and linked only to your session identifier — never to your name or email address.

What we do not collect

  • Full IP addresses (we store only the first three octets for fraud detection)
  • Location data beyond postcode prefix
  • Browsing history or cross-site tracking data
  • Payment information of any kind

How we use your data

Your votes are used solely to calculate public opinion results on each question and to produce the Accountability Gap — the difference between public and parliamentary voting. Results are always presented in aggregate. No individual vote is ever published or identifiable.

Demographic data, where provided, is used to produce breakdowns of results by age, sex, region, and political background. This data is always presented in groups, never individually.

Data sharing

We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with political parties, advertisers, or third parties for commercial purposes. Aggregated, anonymised results data may be shared with researchers, media organisations, and public affairs professionals as part of our B2B data service. No individual votes or profiles are ever included in any data sharing.

Cookies and tracking

We use a session token stored in your browser's local storage to remember your votes within a session. This is not an advertising cookie and is not shared with any third party. We use privacy-first analytics (Plausible) which does not use cookies and does not track you across websites.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, or delete any personal data we hold about you. Because votes are stored anonymously using a session identifier, we cannot link a vote to a named individual without your assistance. If you have an account, you may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, contact privacy@commongrounduk.com.

Data retention

Vote records are retained permanently as part of the public accountability record. Anonymous session data is retained for 12 months. Account data is retained until account deletion is requested. We do not retain full IP addresses beyond 24 hours.

ICO registration

Common Ground UK Ltd is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office as a data controller. ICO registration number to be published here upon completion of registration.
